My player has not played much/any hockey recently, can my player attend your Development Camp?
We welcome players of all abilities at our Development Camp – our coaches will provide activities to ensure that all players develop their hockey over the course of the Camp at an appropriate pace. Our focus is on fun and engaging activities that provide an experience different to school and/or Club.
My player attended Academy Centre training in 2020/21, should my player attend your Development Camp?
Our Development Camp is aimed at providing players of all abilities with a chance to practice and develop their hockey in a fun environment. We welcome players who have previously been part of England Hockey’s Academy Centre but the Development Camp is not a pre-requisite for Academy Centre Selection. All players will benefit from pitch time over the summer, whether at our Development Camp or elsewhere.
Does my player need to attend all 3 days of your Development Camp?
Players can attend 1, 2 or all 3 days of our Development Camp and we will provide a positive experience. we find that players develop significantly over the course of the camp so really benefit from attending all 3 days. Please use the Google Form to tell us which days your player is attending so we can plan our Camp.
Why do you only run Development Camps for U13s?
We believe our Development Camp offer a unique training opportunity for U13s – players have fun whilst developing their hockey skills in an environment that is different to either school or club; the camp environment works well for players, coaches and parents alike.
My player will enter Y6 in September 2021, can my player attend your Development Camp?
For 2021, England Hockey’s U13 age band is for players entering Y8 in September 2021 i.e. born between Sep 08 and Aug 09. By welcoming players in Y7, Bedfordshire Hockey extends the opportunity to participate in our Development Camp to additional players with positive benefits for our training environment. We are unable to extend the invitation further, so our Development Camp is open for players entering Y7 and Y8 only in September 2021.
Why is training at Bedford?
We require access to a double pitch and a clubhouse to provide an appropriate training environment.
Why is Academy Centre training on a Monday night, finishing at 9pm which is quite late?
Training on Monday evenings avoids clashes with junior club training – this impacts Academy Centre players who play and/or coach at clubs. Also, many of our coaches play National League or East League Hockey on Saturdays with significant travelling distance so Sunday is their only day to spend with family/at home! Most club training sessions are Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday and survey feedback tells us that Friday nights are not popular with parents, players or coaches!
We have found that 2 hour training sessions offer the best experience for players. We recognise that rush hour traffic poses challenges for parents and coaches trying to get to Bedford Hockey Centre. Our solution is to start training sessions at 7pm and finish at 9pm but only once a month, on average. Feedback this season has been very positive from players and parents.
